I thought I hadn’t seen Roger Rabbit until I caught the ending of it today on HBO.  Then I saw this motherfucker and remembered it being terrifying.

I have never seen the TV show, Friday Night Lights.

Just kidding, I watched 50 hour-long episodes in 4 days this week.  Pop Culture Blind Spot: Slightly smaller.

Friday Night Lights is an American television series adapted by Peter Berg, Brian Grazer and David Nevins from a book and film of the same name. The series details events surrounding the Dillon Panthers, a high school football team based in fictional Dillon, Texas, with particular focus given to the team’s coach, Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his family. The show uses this small-town backdrop to address many issues facing contemporary Middle America.

I have never heard R. Kelly’s Ignition (Remix).

What I do know about it:  I’m just messing with you, man I love that song.

I have never seen the film, “Goonies”.

What I know about it:  It’s a movie released in the 80s about 10 teenage boys.  They possibly go off in search of some treasure.  Faint mental image of a pirate ship stranded underground.  Also, there is a human-like monster of some sort with a weird face.  The term ‘Goonies’ either refers to the boys or the pirate monsters, pretty sure.  One of the two.  Unclear. 

Also “Goonies never say die” and “Heyyyyy you guyysss” are things to be yelled.

The Goonies is a 1985 American adventure-comedy film directed by Richard Donner. The screenplay was written by Chris Columbus from a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg. A band of kids from the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, hoping to save their homes from demolition, go on an adventure to find the buried treasure of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

I have never seen any of the Die Hard movies (except the new one).

What I know about them:  Most of what I know comes from this song.  Bruce Willis plays John McClane, a police cop who has to rescue his wife from terrorists who take over a building.  At one point Bruce Willis walks barefoot on glass (sounds needlessly staged).  All the movies sound the same, but each one has two things in common:  At one point he says “Yipee-Kay-Ay, motherfucker” and it’s always Christmas.  Except in the last one he didn’t say ‘motherfucker’ and it wasn’t Christmas.

Die Hard is a 1988 action film and the first in the Die Hard film series. The film was directed by John McTiernan and written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza. It is based on a 1979 novel by Roderick Thorp titled Nothing Lasts Forever, itself a sequel to the book The Detective, which was previously made into a 1968 film starring Frank Sinatra. The film was produced by Lawrence and Charles Gordon, along with Joel Silver. It stars Bruce Willis as NYPD officer John McClane and Alan Rickman as terrorist thief Hans Gruber. A critical and commercial success, Die Hard propelled Willis’ film career and established Rickman as a popular portrayer of villains in American film. The film also started the Die Hard series.

I do not know the music of the Foo Fighters.

What I know about them:  Lead singer (guitarist?) Dave Grohl looks funny.  He has large eyes and teeth.  He dresses up in ladies’ costumes in their videos.  One time he was a flight attendant in a video (Possibly ‘Learn to Fly’?).  He has long hair.  There are other members of the Foo Fighters who are not Dave Grohl.  Their identities are not known.

I have never seen “The Hunt for Red October.”

What I know about it:  It’s a movie based on the Tom Clancy book, starring Gene Hackman as a US submarine captain, presumably hunting some sort of Soviet submarine. That’s pretty much it.  It’s a game of cat and mouse, and was a really popular movie, as is my understanding.

Also confused with: Clear and Present Danger.

UPDATE:  Gene Hackman isn’t in “Hunt for Red October” OR “Clear and Present Danger”.  Why did I think he was?  There’s definitely a mental image of Gene Hackman in a Marine’s uniform in a sub.  Am I thinking of “McHale’s Navy”?

UPDATE 2: “Crimson Tide”!  …I have no idea what that one’s about.

The Hunt for Red October is a 1990 film based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. It was directed by John McTiernan and stars Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius and Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan.

The Hunt for Red October received mostly negative critical reviews from many major publications upon its theatrical release but was one of the top grossing films of the year, grossing $122 million in North America and $200 million worldwide. The film won the Academy Award for Sound Editing in 1991.

I have never seen an episode of Daria.

What I do know about it:  One of the first shows to appear after MTV embraced the idea that it was a teenager channel instead of a music channel.  Stars a teenager who’s super serious.  She makes smarmy and clever comments, I’m assuming.  Because her arms are crossed!  And wears glasses!  Unknown voices, unknown cultural impact.

Daria was an American animated television series that ran on the cable network MTV from 1997 to 2002. Created by Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn, the series about a smart, acerbic, and somewhat misanthropic high school girl was a spin-off of MTV’s animated Beavis and Butt-head (1993-1997). The series was widely praised for versatile storytelling and for well-drawn characters^{[citation needed]}, took many satirical jabs at high-school life, and was full of allusions to and criticisms of popular culture, especially then-current pop music.

I have never seen an episode of Beavis and Butthead.

What I know about it:  It’s about two high school dudes who sit around talking in either a low, nasal or a high, grated voice.  They speak in sentence fragments and created a wave of annoying impressions.  Something about “cornholio”.   I could happily live without ever watching this show.

Beavis and Butt-head is an American animated television series created by Mike Judge. Judge’s short film “Frog Baseball“, starring the characters Beavis and Butt-head was featured on Liquid Television, a show featuring short animated and live action material that could be considered the precursor to Cartoon Network‘s Adult Swim. Cable television channel MTV signed Judge to create the series, and it aired from March 8, 1993 to November 28, 1997. It is rated TV-14 when reruns are aired in the United States. Reruns of the series are currently airing on MTV2 and Spike. To this day, the series has retained a large cult following due to its nostalgic quality to young adults who grew up in the 1990s.

I have never seen the movie Labyrinth.

What I do know about it:  It’s a movie about a girl who’s trapped in a Labyrinth for an unclear reason.  How she got there, why it exists and what she is pursing is unclear.  It is apparently very scary, as almost everyone my age is still traumatized from having seen it.  The whole movie has weird fleshy Muppets in it.  Also David Bowie is there, the fleshiest of all the Muppets.

Also confused with:  Captain Eo.  [EDIT:  As @rewby points out, I really really confuse it with “The Dark Crystal” (which I have also never seen).  I considered them to be so similar as to forget that “The Dark Crystal” actually existed.  Is it a sequel?

Labyrinth is a 1986 fantasy film, directed by Jim Henson, produced by George Lucas, and designed by Brian Froud. Henson collaborated on the screenwriting with children’s author Dennis Lee and Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones. The leads are David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King, and Jennifer Connelly as Sarah Williams. The plot revolves around Sarah’s quest to rescue her little brother from the Goblin King while trapped in a world that is an enormous otherworldly maze. Most of the other significant roles are played by puppets or by a combination of puppetry and human performance. It was shot on location in New York and at Elstree Studios and Hampstead Heath in the UK. It was the last feature film directed by Henson before his death in 1990.
